Living a healthy and happy life is on the top of everyone’s list. But how does one get there? To know about the secret to long life, experts identified areas of the world where people live the longest. These places include Italy, Okinawa, Japan, Loma, CA, Linda and Sardina.

These areas were labelled as blue zones and then experts discovered what the people who live in this area consume and have in common.

It was found that people in blue zones were active throughout the day, have a meaningful connection in their community and feel a sense of purpose.

But their diets were also found to have a few things in common. Here are some of the diet tips from the diet of blue zone people that can help you improve your health too.

Eat beans

Eating at least half a cup of beans every day is great for your overall health. Include black, garbanzo and white beans in your daily diet. The good part is that they are also an inexpensive source of plant-based protein and are loaded with fibre, which helps keep your weight under check, lowers your risk of various diseases and improves gut health.

Include cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage contain natural compounds that are good for your heart and can even help ward off some kinds of cancer.

Snack on nuts

Eat around 60 grams of nuts every day, which is around two handfuls. You can include pistachios, walnuts and almonds along with some seeds to get a variety of health benefits. Peanuts can also be included.

Drink more water

People living in the blue zone do drink coffee and tea, but most of their hydration comes from water. Beverages like sodas are the number one source of added sugar for most adults. Most sugary drinks are void of any kind of nutrients.

Eat less sugar

People living in blue zones are very cautious of their sugar intake. They try and minimise their intake of added sugar. Thus, instead of having sugary foods and drinks throughout the day, they tend to eat sugar intentionally only on special occasions.

Eat less meat

Eating more plant-based foods and beans is one of the keys to a healthy and long life. You can include meat as a side dish and should not consume it often. Have green veggies, tofu and soya as a source of protein.

Be grateful and eat with your family

Every day, take out a moment and show gratitude before having a meal. Enjoying meals with your loved ones makes you feel happier while you consume food, which also has an impact on your health.

Take tips from your grandparents

The best advice about any subject can only be given by a person who knows it and has experienced it. Thus, it’s best to sit down with your grandparents and take some tips and learn from them.
